2023 European Physical Society Hannes Alfven Prize bestowed on Prof. Pisin Chen 梁次震中心主任陳丕燊教授榮獲2023年歐洲物理學會艾爾凡獎

The 2023 European Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics(EPS-DPP) Hannes Alfvén Prize is jointly awarded to professors Pisin Chen (National Taiwan University), Jamie Rosenzweig and Chandrashekhar Joshi (both at UCLA) for proposing, demonstrating, and conducting impressive ground-breaking experiments on plasma wakefield accelerators (PWFA) driven by particle beams. The three winners have contributed to different, complementary aspects of the field: they have developed the theoretical concepts, conducted the pioneering demonstration experiments, and guided the applications of this acceleration technique.(http://plasma.ciemat.es/eps/)

Prof. Pisin Chen is the NTU Chee-Chun Leung Distinguished Chair Professor of Cosmology and the Founding Director of Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics (LeCosPA). He is also the Distinguished Chair Professor of the Physics Department. This is yet one more recognition to Prof. Chen’s exceptional scientific contributions after his receiving the Blaise Pascal Chair bestowed by the Government of Ile de France in 2018.

The citation of Prof. Chen’s accomplishments states: “Prof. Pisin Chen is regarded as the inventor of PWFA and played a key role in the theoretical development of the plasma wakefield accelerator principle, energy transfer and beam loading, and plasma lenses at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the 1980s. The extreme gradients and energy gains obtainable from PWFA was a pathbreaking innovation at the energy frontier, and the extreme focusing with plasma lenses was a pathbreaking innovation at the luminosity frontier. He led an experiment at SLAC that successfully demonstrated the plasma lens principle as predicted.”

The 2023 EPS-DPP Hannes Alfven Prize award ceremony was held in Bordeaux, France, on July 3. Prof. Pisin Chen received the prize and delivered a speech at the ceremony.

臺大物理系及天文物理所特聘講座講座教授、梁次震宇宙學特聘講座教授兼「梁次震宇宙學與粒子天文物理學心」主任陳丕燊今年榮獲國際物理學界重量級獎項:「2023年歐洲物理學會哈內斯·艾爾凡獎」(2023 European Physical Society Hannes Alfven Prize)的殊榮。2018 年陳教授曾榮獲著名的法國巴斯卡講座,可謂好事連連。

歐洲主要國家如英法德意都各自擁有歷史悠久、成立數百年的物理學會,但直到1968年跨越國界的歐洲物理學會(EPS) 才正式成立,目前成員有42個歐洲國家,它和美國物理學會同為全世界最有影響力的物理組織。EPS 每年頒發獎項肯定全世界物理學各領域最傑出的貢獻,得獎者不限於歐洲人。陳丕燊教授是第一位從台灣或中國大陸榮獲歐洲物理學會獎項的學者。

今年的艾爾凡獎除了頒給陳丕燊教授,還有另外兩位美國UCLA的物理學家傑米·羅森茲崴(Jamie Rosenzweig) 教授及強卓塞卡·究希 (Chandrasekhar Joshi) 教授合得。EPS肯定他們在發展由高能粒子束驅動的「電漿尾隨場加速器」(Plasma Wakefield Accelerator, PWFA) 上,從提出原創性概念,到實驗證明,到進一步優化及應用,他們三位做出了不同但相輔相成的貢獻。歐洲物理學會在宣布艾爾凡獎的新聞稿中還說,自從1980年代他們提出概念並以實驗證明『電漿尾隨場加速器』以來,世界各國許多小型、中型、大型加速器實驗室,包括歐洲核子物理研究中心(CERN),都在進行PWFA的研究,如今它已經成為國際科學界充滿活力的研究領域。它的應用從產生袖珍型高密度相對論性電子束,新穎的光子束,到研究高能物理所需的超相對論性電子束,不一而足。新聞中特別提到陳丕燊教授來自國立台灣大學。

歐洲物理學會在頒給陳丕燊教授艾爾凡獎的頌詞中說:「陳丕燊教授被譽為『電漿尾隨場加速器』(PWFA) 的發明者,並於1980年代在美國國立SLAC加速器中心對電漿尾隨場加速原理的理論基礎,包括其能量傳遞 (energy transfer)、粒子束酬載 (beam loading)、及電漿透鏡效應 (plasma lensing effect) 等概念的發展上扮演了至關重要的原創性角色。他所提出的PWFA機制能夠提供超高的加速梯度及能量,在高能物理的能量前沿 (energy frontier) 極具開創性(pathbreaking),而他從理論上發現電漿透鏡效應能提供超強的聚焦,則在高能物理的光度前沿(luminosity frontier) 極具開創性。他並且在SLAC領導電漿透鏡實驗,成功的證實了他自己的理論預測。」(詳情請參考 EPS 網站:http://plasma.ciemat.es/eps/)
